Greetings from Dusseldorf, also known as Drizzle-dorf because it rains so often. Thankfully, I have become acclimated to this weather, and it helps coming from Seattle, Washington.
My experiences at the International School of Dusseldorf have been exciting thus far in my student teaching. The journey to get here was not too bad either. With the help of University of Idaho and with the University of Northern Iowa - I am living my dream of working at a prestigious international school.
The International School of Dusseldorf or ISD offers many great features; technology throughout the classrooms, including one to one laptop program, smart board/promethium boards/TV in any active learning classroom. Students are also exposed to different languages and cultures, a range of electives for students to choose from, and an exceptional learning environment for the students and staff. This school has opened my eyes to collaboration, what it takes to being a successful leader, and how a positive attitude can affect everyone around you. I feel fortunate to experience what it is to be an effective and efficient teacher in the classroom. My mentors and
supervisor have taken the time to show me effective PD (professional development) and push me to use these methods in and out of the classroom.
At first, I was quite anxious coming into such an established school with a great reputation, but
as I became more involved in the classroom, I noticed (from the feedback and reactions) that this was a wonderful starting point for me. I believe in the school's message, I love integrating technology in the classroom, as well as, using as much creativity I can in my lessons. I just finished a lesson on “dead words” (overused words), and with the support of my mentors I was given the freedom to be creative in crafting tombstones, and making a graveyard (as seen attached below) to add to the classroom atmosphere. Fortunately, the staff in the English department approves of my endless ideas and continues to challenge me to be the best educator and leader I can be.
Favorite things to do in Dusseldorf:
1. Walk along the Rhine (River), especially on a sunny day!
2. Eating at the markets, the food is incredibly delicious and fresh.
3. Visiting the Altstadt – many restaurants to choose from, as well as
musicians/magicians/entertainment throughout the area.
4. Working at ISD, great atmosphere to spend the majority of my time.
5. Going to the Trinkhalle (a concert hall) to see symphonies – I enjoy classical music.
